Wedding Cake History Of The Cake And Topper

The wedding cake and topper are still some of the most important features of a wedding. The origin of the cake can be traced to the days of the Roman Empire. Needless to say that we find today that it is vastly different from what it was during that time. In its early stages, these were not the sweet iced cakes that we know of today. Rather, these cakes were made of a whole wheat flower. It was customary to break this bread cake over the bride's head after which the wedding guests would eat the small pieces of the broken cake and consider it good luck. During the end-1600's, the wedding cake came to be known as the bride's pie or cake. These were mostly mince pies made of sweet breads with a glass ring being one of its principal ingredients. It was believed that the lady who would find the ring would be the next woman to tie the knot.

The name bride's cake suggests that there is a visual link too between the bride and the wedding cake. That is why many of today's brides prefer a contemporary wedding cake coordinated with their wedding gown color, even if it is not white. Yet another custom was sleeping with a piece of cake under one's pillow. The small pieces of the broken cake were then passed through the bride's wedding ring. These pieces were then given to the female guests who would put the pieces under their pillow when they went to sleep. It was believed that those women then would have a dream of their future husbands.

The wedding cake topper also boasts a long history and has remained a wedding tradition for long. In fact, it has been there for so long that most of the details of when it originated are still shrouded in mystery. The legend has it that the wedding cake topper was first used over 100 years ago when the daughter of a baker was getting married. The bride requested her father to make some symbol of the love between her and her would-be husband that everyone could see. After careful deliberation, the baker decided to place two figurines on top of the wedding cake symbolizing the bride and the groom. The figurines stood in the center of the cake and at the center of the wedding. No one can prove the authenticity of this story, but it goes to say something about the significance of the topper. Custom made wedding cake toppers are available these days that can vary in price, detail and materials.
